Applied GeoSolutions is working with Winrock International to map land use and model AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use) greenhouse gas emissions in two provinces in Vietnam. AGS will identify and map the main agricultural land use patterns in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An using multiple satellite platforms. The complementary characteristics of Landsat, MODIS, and PALSAR will be validated with ground data collected at multiple locations. This combination of data is selected to provide maps of land cover and land use at a high level of spatial detail across large regions. AGS and Winrock International will work together to design the Tier 1 greenhouse gas accounting approach for agricultural lands in Vietnam and outline the specific requirements for Tier 2 and 3 approaches. The USAID-backed project is designed to demonstrate a methodological approach to land cover mapping and greenhouse gas accounting that can eventually be applied across Vietnam.
