Dr. James Maxwell will be on campus Monday, January 24 and Tuesday, January 25, 2011 to meet with interested administrators, faculty, staff, and community members to share his expertise in getting businesses off the ground and helping healthcare research teams win small business innovation research (SBIR) awards.
Dr. Maxwell is Director of Research at the JSI Research and Training Institute (JSI), a large global public health firm. He holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Public Policy where he also received post doctoral training in Health Economics and Management. He and his wife, Dr. Sue Levkoff (newly hired endowed chair for SmartHOME in the SeniorSMART Center of Economic Excellence), also run a small company - Environment and Health Group - out of Cambridge, MA that specializes in health and wellbeing for older adults. In just the last three years, they have been successful in securing more than $2.5 million in SBIR grants. Among their many projects include: building online communities for caregivers with dementia; developing e-interventions for patients over 50 to help prevent spread of HIV; developing a unique, health risk appraisal and coaching service for people over 50 in the workplace; and creating remote patient monitoring systems for elderly with chronic diseases. Dr. Maxwell plans to relocate to South Carolina in the near future with hopes that he can leverage his expertise and highly successful track record with SBIRs to help USC, Innovista, and the surrounding community develop new start-up companies and attract new businesses.
A nationally recognized expert on health insurance and state health care reforms, Dr. Maxwell will also be presenting a lecture on: "Implementation of National Health Care Reform: Lessons from Massachusetts's Experience (2006-2010)" on Tuesday, January 25, from 4:00-5:00 pm, in Coker Life Sciences (CLS 110), located at 715 Sumter Street. During the presentation, he will talk about lessons that can be drawn from Massachusetts's experience for the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Adopted in 2006, the Massachusetts model introduced key concepts contained in the ACA, including the individual mandate, health insurance exchanges, and income based subsidies for purchasing coverage. Dr. Maxwell will also present data on the actual implementation practices and results in Massachusetts and discuss the implications for national reform. As Massachusetts was the primary model for national health care reform, its experiences are highly relevant to national and state policy discussions.
