In June 2002, ONI Systems Corporation was acquired by CIENA. A spin-off from Optivision, Inc., ONI Systems Corp. had worked on communications networking equipment, based entirely on optical technology, for metropolitan area and regional networks. The Company's equipment used pulses of light rather than electric current in the transmission and routing of telephone, Internet and other data communications in these networks and was designed to address bandwidth and service limitations of regional and metropolitan networks. The company offered online products that are used in conventional ring network topologies.
