Already too large to be SBIR-involved, in June 2000 E-Tek was acquired by JDS Uniphase. The firm continues to trade under its own symbol (NASDAQ: ETEK). E-TEK is a leader in the design, packaging and manufacturing of high quality passive components and modules for fiber optic networks. In 1986, E-TEK fabricated the first 21/30 GHz, 1Km fiber-optic link, and in 1989 introduced its first polarization-sensitive fiber isolator, which captured a major share of an emerging market within its year of sales. Prompted by demands for highly reliable fiber-optic products, E-TEK soon became a leading supplier of diverse optical components and modules. In 1996, shortly after receiving ISO-9001 certification, E-TEK introduced an 8-channel WDM (wavelength division multiplexer) for fiber-optic networks. As part of the company's strategy and long-term goal, in 1999 E-TEK completed the acquisition of two complementary companies-ElectroPhotonics Corporation (EPC) and Kaifa Technology. EPC, now renamed E-TEK ElectroPhotonics Solutions (EPS), is a pioneer in the development of fiber-optic Bragg grating for the sensing and telecom markets.
