In September 2006, Acoustech Corporation was acquired by Applied Physical Sciences Corp. A leading source of expertise in directional underwater transducers APS and Acoustech provide complementary capabilities, and with the merger can now offer the full spectrum of underwater acoustic system design â with a particular emphasis on directional transducer applications. Acoustech's primary business is the development of high precision sensors that measure both the acoustic pressure and particle velocity at a single point in space. The measurement of these two quantities can fully describe an acoustic field in a manner that conventional omni-directional hydrophones cannot. The sensors can be used as diagnostic tools to map the complex sound radiation patterns from submerged structures, support off-shore oil exploration, understand how certain species of marine life communicate, and localize sources of sound within the ocean (e.g., submarines, sources of ambient noise, marine life). The measurement band of these devices typically covers the same range as human hearing (e.g., frequencies below 20 kHz)
