A 2-speed final drive design is proposed for a military tracked vehicle. The application is for the US Army M88 heavy recovery vehicle. The design includes a selectable external speed change device as well as the service brakes. The design is composed of two interconnected planetary gearsets which provide a normal vehicle speed capability and a low speed capability. This enables the vehicle to recover very heavy loads while still maintaining a normal speed capability.
