Minebuster is a chemically-specific, direct, real time detector of 28g -10 Kg of plastic and other non-metallic, and metallic land mines from a moving radio-controlled vehicle with >95% efficiency. It consists of (1) 'microcollider' - a developed, patented device and (2) 'gammalizer' -the engineering principle the feasibility of which is to be tested. (1) Microcollider provides: target-less DC production of fast neutrons in colliding micro-beams of a variety of ions; energy, direction and production time of each neutron from measurement of recoil nucleus ;103times n fluxes and 10 times center-of mass energy than in beam-on-target (BOT) neutron generators; and neutron energy modulation. (2) Gammalizer measures gamma (g) energies from inelastic neutron scattering, (n,n'g), on N14, C12 and O16 ('signal'), as well as on Fe56, Al27 and other metals with 1% energy resolution thus discriminating against over 103 spurious g peaks from the fast neutron irradiated soil. Gammalizer consists of 'signal enhancer' which increases the signal by a factor of 100, and 'differential de-noiser' that suppresses g background by a factor of 100-1,000. Minebuster is projected to detect 28 g of RDX from a distance of 1 meter in 1 second. - Phase I would be a laboratory demonstration of gammalyzer, using a BOT neutron generator and a neutron 'energy spurtler'. Favorable result of Phase I would facilitate a prompt design, construction and test of demo model of Minebuster in Phase II. Demo of an operating Minebuster in Phase II would lead to 2 industrial products that would fill the void in non-metallic and metallic mine detection: (1) mobile land mine detector with a mine sweeping capacity of 50,000 mines/y and (2) stationary detector for luggage, trucks and containers for transport and building security applications.
