In a concerted effort to augment market presence, TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. (TQNT) recently acquired CA-based CAP Wireless, Inc. and its patented Spatium RF (radio frequency) power combining technology for an undisclosed amount. The combined company would boast a wider selection of high-power, high-frequency products by leveraging TriQuint's leading position as a gallium nitride (GaN) pioneer and CAP Wireless' expertise in high-power RF solid state amplifier systems.

The Spatium technology of CAP Wireless improves RF power efficiency, increases reliability, boosts power densities and reduces weight compared with other available variants. This is mostly achieved through the use of patented coaxial spatial combining techniques in its products.

It is widely used in high-performance traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs) and amplifier-based subsystems like electronic warfare, communications and radars, which are largely used by leading defense and communications companies worldwide.

TriQuint anticipates the market for TWTAs to exceed $600 million by 2015. Consequently, the acquisition offers tremendous revenue-generating potential for TriQuint. Post-acquisition, TriQuint will continue operation of CAP Wireless product sales and contracts, while developing new devices based on Spatium technology using GaN and GaAs MMIC amplifiers.

Headquartered in Hillsboro, OR, TriQuint manufactures semiconductors for the wireless handset segment, infrastructure networks, and defense markets. TriQuint products reduce costs and increase the performance of connected mobile devices and networks that deliver critical voice, data and video communications.

TriQuint currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other stocks that look promising and are worth a look include Marvell Technology Group Ltd (MRVL), Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (CY) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD), each carrying Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
