Prof. Juan Carlos Miñano of the UPM (Universidad Politéctina de Madrid) and LPI, LLC, has been promoted as an SPIE Fellow of the Society. Prof. Miñano has made many significant contributions to the field of nonimaging optics in the past. His work in illumination optics and the design of concentration optics is extensive, innovative and has been commercialized in several products. His research has had a major impact in the area of solar concentrators (including world record breaking results in the lab) and has markedly increased the efficiency of light collection from LED sources. He is the co-author of Nonimaging Optics and has published 12 chapters in other books, 38 papers, and over 130 conference communications. He has more than 40 patent applications in the field.

Dr. Miñano is one of 69 scientists to be promoted to Fellows of the Society by the SPIE. He is being honored for his achievements in nonimaging optics. Presentation of these honors will take place at the SPIE Conference in August of this year in San Diego, CA.

These scientists are being recognized for significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging and for their service to the general optics community and to SPIE in particular. More than 1,000 SPIE members have become Fellows since the Society was founded in 1955.
