Ambri (formerly Liquid Metal Battery Corporation) is an early-stage energy storage startup company based in Cambridge, MA. The Liquid Metal Battery was invented at MIT in Professor Donald Sadoway’s lab, and the company was formed in 2010 to commercialize the technology.
Professor Sadoway developed the idea for the Liquid Metal Battery in his lab at MIT based on 40 years of research in extreme electrochemical processes. Instead of taking cues from other electrical storage technologies, he sought to mimic the principles behind huge aluminum smelters that operate at high temperature and consume massive amounts of energy. With this and the periodic table of elements in mind, Professor Sadoway invented a low cost battery that could store massive amounts of energy.
The Liquid Metal Battery was invented from the start with the core principle that any pervasive storage technology must be low cost. The Liquid Metal Battery will be made from earth-abundant materials and simple to manufacture. To drive these results, Ambri is committed to hiring individuals that have the ability to think, learn, and develop outside the conventional wisdom of battery experts.
