Golden, Colorado. Equinox Interscience (EI), specialists in astronomical telescopes and optics, installed a custom 16-inch primary telescope at the Haleakala Observatory this week. This synoptic system will be used for the Very Young Stellar Object Survey (VYSOS). The installation is the first of two systems that were built under a contract awarded in 2003.

Through tight collaboration between the Institute for Astronomy (IFA) at the University of Hawaii and the Institut fur Astronomie at the Ruhr-Universitat Bochum in Germany, these two telescopes will be devoted to an ambitious observational program dedicated to systematically monitoring the nearest star forming regions along the entire plane of our home galaxy. The two systems will be operated autonomously, one from the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, and the other from Cerro Armazonas Observatory in Chile.
