Carnegie Robotics LLC has been awarded a $23 million contract to build landmine-seeking robots for the U.S. Army, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

The autonomous mine detection system is being developed to provide soldiers the capability to detect, mark and neutralize explosive hazards.

The majority of the work on the project will be completed in Pittsburgh, with additional support from facilities in Woburn, Mass., and King of Prussia. Pa. Work on the project is expected to be complete in March 2018, according to the DOD.

A representative from Carnegie Robotics, which spun out of Carnegie Mellon University's National Robotics Engineering Center in 2013, was not immediately available for comment. The company was spun out to commercialize projects being developed at CMU.
