The research division of Invincea Inc. has landed $8.1 million in federal cybersecurity funds.

The funding will go toward developing new technologies that will identify and protect against malware, especially on Android devices, Invincea said in a news release. For the startup, the new cash expands its ties with the federal government, following a $21.4 million U.S. Army contract in 2012.

Invincea raised $16 million in a Series C round in December, led by Aeris Capital and Dell Ventures. Earlier in 2013, Dell Inc. inked a deal with Invincea to include the Virginia company's browser security software in its "protected workspace" security offering, which could reach 20 million devices.

Invincea also announced this week that it has signed 54 new enterprise clients over the past half year, which spans federal agencies and commercial customers.
