NEW YORK (GenomeWeb) -- Affymetrix announced on Thursday that it has acquired the assets of Eureka Genomics, including its high-throughput crop and animal genotyping technology, for $15 million in cash.
Eureka's low- and mid-plex genotyping assays use common next-generation sequencing platforms for signal readout, and enable the detection of hundreds to thousands of genetic markers for crop and animal agrigenomics testing, according to Affymetrix.
Affymetrix said it will immediately launch Eureka's technologies as Eureka Genotyping Solution and Services through an early-access program.
"An emerging segment of our customers have been asking for a cost-effective solution with focused genetic variant panels for very high-volume routine testing in animal and plant applications such as parentage, traceability, or trait management," Affymetrix President and CEO Frank Witney said in a statement. "This acquisition will extend the continuum of our product offerings, enabling us to support more applications for our current customers and to serve new customers."
Affymetrix also said that it has signed a multi-year deal to provide Eureka's technologies to Zoetis for use in its animal genetics business. The arrangement specifically allows Zoetis to incorporate the technologies into its cattle and sheep genomic products.
Financial terms of the Zoetis agreement were not disclosed.
