ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Nov. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Optical Technologies, Inc. (AOT) has been awarded a Phase 2 SBIR contract to develop a next-generation laser polarimeter for the US Army RDECOM CERDEC Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD), traditionally known as the US Army Night-Vision Labs. The polarimeter will implement AOT's state-of-the-art polarization-components techniques (PCT), which apply machine-learning algorithms to polarimeter data for remote material classification, and will overcome traditional hardware limitations to fielding a fast, compact laser polarimeter. CEO Dr. Brian G. Hoover stated, "This is an important mission for the Army and for AOT. Night Vision Labs is in fact demonstrating great vision by investing in sensor technology poised to make the jump from laboratory to field implementations. With the advances to be achieved under this program laser polarimetry will be ready to meet diverse remote material-classification needs in defense, aerospace, manufacturing, and environmental markets. Compared to passive polarimeters, which have already been fielded, active laser polarimeters provide additional information and enhanced capabilities for automated target recognition, real-time structural-health monitoring, thin-film, textile, and polymer process monitoring, and debris mapping and assessment. Laser polarimetry is complementary to multi-spectral sensing, and has similar market potential-AOT is on the verge of opening new markets for laser sensors." AOT expects to have a prototype laser polarimeter ready for NVESD field tests by mid-2014. (Approved for public release-distribution unlimited.)
