Albuquerque company VisionQuest Biomedical has developed a mobile application meant to diagnose concussions.
"It's important to spread awareness about traumatic brain injury right now. So we hope with this app we can educate people as well as detect concussions a lot earlier," Ricky VanNess of VisionQuest Biomedical said.
It's not meant to replace a physician, but instead to give a quick way to check for concussions and raise awareness.
Concussions in sports have been a more widely known issue in the past few years, and Michael and Michele Grange have made awareness of concussions their mission.
"It's what our son suffered from and we think awareness, education and medical research needs to happen so things like this don't happen again," Michael Grange said.
"If we knew when what we know when our kids were small about head trauma, we'd do things differently and we hope parents out there will too," Michele Granger said.
It's their way of honoring their son Patrick. He died of ALS in 2012 and doctors believe brain damage earlier in life could have played a role.
Saturday, fans at an Albuquerque Sol soccer game lifted 4's in Pat's honor.
"It made us very happy," Michael Grange said.
"We couldn't be happier, the more awareness we can get out there - this is Pat's legacy," Michele Grange said.
The Granges hope his memory makes a difference for families.
The company producing an application hopes they can be one more player in the quest to spot concussions and prevent brain damage.
