XWING is structured around development of the suite of technologies required for development of pilotless commercial flight of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and fixed-wing aircraft. The company has brought together experts in unmanned and optionally-piloted aircraft, flight control systems (including at DO-178 Design Assurance Level A), redundancy management, and sensor fusion, along with some of the best software talent the Bay Area offers to achieve the defined goal of autonomous flight. The firm is teamed with Bell - a Textron Inc company, Textron Systems, and the University of Massachusetts Amhersts Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) organIzed around tackling the key remaining challenges that prevent routine commercial unmanned aircraft operations. Flight demonstrations are planned for 2020 with early applications including cargo transport missions for medical facilities, disaster relief and offshore platform supply.
