Based on work undertaken by University of Nebraska as a student, Wildsense LLC was established with a licensing agreement with NUtech Ventures, the nonprofit corporation responsible for commercializing UNL research. Demonstrated on farms throughout Nebraska, the focus was on enabling more effective water usage in agriculure. Using sensors buried in soil to gather information about soil moisture, temperature and changing conditions, the underground sensor networks send Information wirelessly to a center pivot irrigation system or a base station, providing accurate, real-time data to help farmers determine when and how much to irrigate: a practical irrigation management tool. The emphasis is also to make the clostof the technology so low that farmers in developing countries can take advantage of the system.
