With close ties to Johns Hopkins University -- also the source for Vasoptic's exclusively licensed technology -- Vasoptic Medical, Inc. is a biotechnology and medical device company developing devices for earlier diagnosis of disease -- using technology in retinal imaging and on surgically-exposed body parts. The firm's first product is a retinal imaging instrument enabling diagnosis of diseases detectable through indicators in the eye - for example diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, a condition that affects nearly one in three patients with diabetes and can cause damage to blood vessels in the eye and vision loss. Current effort is to use recently raised funds to push toward FDA approval to enable subsequent commercial application. Other products include technology to help surgeons better visualize blood flow in tissues during operations, and a flight of imaging products that can be used by researchers in pre-clinical and clinical trials. The overall objective is to use the technology to support routine monitoring, improving the way chronic diseases are managed.
