Unisun is a small privately-held company working to develop and commercialize innovative photovoltaic (PV) solar energy technologies for cost-effectively converting sunlight directly to electricity. Unisun's core technology is a set of proprietary techniques for preparing high-quality thin films useful for fabricating low-cost PV power modules. The basic concept is simple: deposit thin layers of specialized precursor materials using simple non-vacuum techniques and convert the layers into high-quality PV films by reactive sintering techniques. The use of thin films of materials provides substantial cost advantages relative to traditional PV products based on silicon wafers. The use of low-cost, non-vacuum techniques for depositing and sintering layers provides substantial cost advantages relative to capital- intensive vacuum deposition techniques typically used to deposit PV thin films. The simplicity of Unisun's proprietary techniques will allow low-cost PV products to be manufactured in relatively unsophisticated industrial settings, e.g. in urban economic development zones and in developing countries.
