Public Profile

Synthecon Inc specializes in the design and manufacture of 3D mechanical cell culture systems, technology originally developed for the NASA bioreactor space programs, which can produce organized, 3-dimensional cultures of differentiated human cells outside the body. The company is currently developing a perfused culture system for this equipment system, called the Rotary Cell Culture System (RCCS), allowing for continuous feeding of the cell chamber from an external media bottle. The cells are retained in the cell chamber by molecular weight cutoff membranes, allowing inline monitoring of pH, oxygen and glucose levels, with inline mounted, user supplied sensors. The company also develops the RollerCell, a self-contained, automated roller bottle processing system that replaces traditional roller bottle apparatuses and perform tasks previously undertaken manually or by robotic processors. The product is suitable for all current roller bottle applications in research laboratories and large scale manufacturing sites - including the production of Human and Animal vaccines, "clean cells" for fermenter culture, and recombinant proteins for therapeutic applications. The RollerCell has been designed to automate all stages of roller bottle based tissue culture - from cell inoculation, incubation, media change and trypsinisation through to final harvest – to improve batch consistency optimize yields. A single RollerCell unit can process the equivalent of 200 standard roller bottles simultaneously, producing dramatic time savings, leading to significant reductions in labor costs and the virtual elimination of handling related contamination
