Spinnaker Biosciences is a biotechnology company developing a drug-delivery system for intraocular use. Using proprietary technology exclusively licensed from UC San Diego, Spinnaker has developed a porous silicon photonic crystal capable of controlled delivery of low doses of targeted medication. The electrochemically-etched silicon chips can be formulated to handle a wide range of medicine. As of 2014, Spinnaker is developing a version of its technology to treat age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss worldwide. Spinnaker's product replaces costly, time-consuming, and risky injections of drugs into the eye.
