Acquired by REDDIT in June 2022, Spell is the MLOps platform - machine learning platform - built to meet the unique challenges of operationalizing deep learning at scale. Founded by former Facebook engineer Serkan Piantino in 2016, Spell has provided cloud computing solution to allow people to run resource-intensive ML experiments without high-end hardware. The platforms machine learning technology is expected to help Reddit bolster its own capabilities in the space - enabling improved speed and relevance on its platform across product, safety and advertising. Noting that machine learning and artificial intelligence are important tools that help users make connections faster and more relevant to people, Spells team members are movied to Reddit to spearhead new machine learning projects in/by the company. Tackled projects will relate to how the system identifies and classifies contextual relevance, organizes conversations, customiszes ad placements and protects communities. Reddit has been using technologies such as machine learning to improve user experience on its site by suggesting relevant content and communities.
