Acquired by Armor Holdings, Inc. in 2003 Simula, Inc had been heavily involved in the SBIR Prrogram from the earliest days in 1983 through it outgrowing the program in 1995. Armor Holidings was itself acquired by BAE Systems in 2007 since when the former SBIR firm has been called BAE Systems Simula. While SBIR involved, Simula had worked on advanced occupant seating and restraint systems with their systems being installed installed in air, ground, and sea transport vehicles for the military, commercial airline, and automotive industries. In the military seating systems, the firm developed the Cockpit Air Bag System (CABS) for US Army helicopters, the Small Arms Protective Insert (SAPI) armor system, and parachutes. Simula developed and produced the first crashworthy armored crew seats for the US Army UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache helicopters. The Company operated two business segments. The Commercial Transportation Products segment includes technology development and manufacturing operations for seating systems for airliners and products and safety systems for automobiles and trucks. The Company's Government and Defense segment includes technology development and manufacturing operations for military aircraft seating, armor, and crew safety systems sold principally to U.S. and foreign armed forces.
