Seaspire Inc, spun out of Northeastern University, develops sustainable products and materials for the skincare industry. The firm's products utilize the biomolecule Xanthochrome, found in marine life, and offers a more sustainable and less toxic material than current products in the skincare and sunscreen spaces. Xanthochrome offers UV filtering capabalities that protect against solar irradiation and can be used in preventative skincare, as the compounds scatter and absorb light and can protection a broader spectrum of UV radiation, from UV to near IR, compared with current physical and chemical UV filters. In addition to sunscreen, the technology could have applications to treat chronic and cosmetic hair and skin conditions.
