On April 2000, Ortel was acquired by Lucent Technologies (Nasdaq : LU). Active in the SBIR arena, Ortel's early endeavors organized around developing semiconductor lasers for high-speed government applications and fiberoptic link technology for remoting satellite antennas at microwave frequencies. Capitalizing on the rich technological foundation thus established, ORTEL Corporation pioneered the development of high-performance lasers, RF electronics and system technologies that drove the wide scale deployment of linear fiber optics in commercial cable TV networks, satellite earth stations, mobile phone antenna sites and military systems. Until its acquisition, Ortel Corporation supplied optoelectronic components in the cable television, satellite communications, wireless, data communications, and telecommunications markets. The firm's product line consisted of packaged lasers and photodiodes coupled to optical fiber, transmitters, and receivers incorporating modules and other circuits; and transmitters and receivers in modular rack-mount chassis designs.
