Focused on use in situations requiring mass production, Origin offers a new form of additive manufacturing platform featuring an open materials network, extensible software, and modular hardware. The firm developed what is described as a manufacturing-grade printer that enables additive mass production of end-use parts - a completely different type of resin 3D printer based on digital light processing (DLP). Through hardware, software and material partnerships, the company is changing what is possible inside a photopolymerization printer. Early on during the pandemic, the firm was reported as having shifted its resources from being a 3D printer manufacturer to becoming a medical device manufacturer, and began production to address the massive shortage of COVID-19 test kits. In late 2020 it was announced that Minnesota-based, publicly traded company Stratasys (NASDAQ:SSYS) had acquired Origin Laboratories for $100M in stock and cash
