Named for its founder and established in 2015 as a firm specialziing in Patent / IP engagement, in 2016 the principals established Two Planet Steel known for work in the development of steel production technology, specializing in clean, renewable-based steel production technology that is applicable for production on Mars. Olsen is the author of the Steel Seeds Plan to Start Human Settlement of Mars He was previously the Principal Investigator for a California Energy Commission funded thermal energy storage project for renewable electricity generation and simultaneously worked on high temperature heat recuperation for gas turbines. He was a scientist at UC San Diego for several years where he applied artificial intelligence techniques and big data to study the evolution of protein sequences and the Eukaryotic Tree of Life. His basic scientific education was in physics at UC San Diego and UC Berkeley. He invented the widely used Island Method for statistical assessments of sequence alignments.
