Oblate Optics Inc, spun out of the University of Utah, develops and manufactures optical solutions with capabilities including time of flight, laser marking, thermal imaging, and beam shaping. The company has developed an optical surface design technology that enables ultralight, low cost and high performance meatless surfaces. The design is a flat lens that could enable technology such as thinner smartphone cameras, improved and smaller cameras for biomedical imaging, and more compact cameras for automobiles. The new lens eliminates the need for focusing and allows cameras to keep objects at different distances in focus simultaneously, proving new opportunities over traditional lenses.
