The now-listed Awardee - Novuson Surgical (medical equipment manufacturer) - has developed a hemostatic technology for ablating tissue, isolating tumors, and providing hemostatic control prior to and during surgery. Spun out of University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratoryâs Center for Industrial and Medical Ultrasound, the enabling technology - Direct Therapeutic Ultrasound (DTU) surgical instruments for minimally invasive vessel sealing/dividing, and other surgical specialties - can be used to assist emergency, specialty and general physicians in quickly performing surgeries without the complications associated with bleeding. The devices cauterize tissue from the inside out, creating a well-defined, controlled plane of cauterization. The technology's goal is to reduce surgical time, anesthesia time, and minimize blood product usage; improving patient outcomes and decreasing healthcare costs
