Public Profile

Longhurst Engineering has been working on an in-space friction stir welding (FSW) machine capable of being deployed by 2 people (or less) and that be used to weld complex surfaces that extend beyond linear welding applications. The key enabler of the proposed FSW machine is a self adjusting and aligning FSW (SAA-FSW) tool that eliminates the need for automated actuators. The successful development of a portable FSW machine could enable manual applications of FSW on Earth and in space. Expected TRL (1-9) at beginning: 2 end of contract: 3 Technical Objectives 1) Enable the emergence of a portable FSW machine through the initial research and development of: a) A Self Adjusting and Aligning FSW (SAA-FSW) tool. b) Combined force reduction techniques. 2) Provide a prototype design of a portable multi-axis FSW system with: a) Adjustable mounting. b) Detached power system. c) Deployable by 2 people. d) Manual operation. Work Plan 1.Perform experimental FSW research utilizing force reduction techniques. 2.Develop prototype SAA-FSW tool and conduct welding. 3.Perform preliminary engineering analysis of the FSW machine. 4.Integrate 2 person portability into the FSW machine. Non - Proprietary Data NASA Applications 1.In-space FSW operations for assembly and repair of complex panels. 2.Replacement of self reacting FSW tool actuators and control systems with SAA-FSW tool. 3.In-space manufacturing and repair. Non - NASA Applications 1.FSW operations at Boeing and Lockheed Martin. 2.Enabling small businesses
