Organized around enabling sustainable development of cities, the health and restoration of forests, and increased transparency on mass timber systems and with strong ties to related efforts at MIT, Generate LLC is focused on encouraging and supportng wider use utilizing of building materials best lended to pre-vetted, computational design. Buildings are among the largest consumers of global resources and all energy produced, and are primary contributors to greenhouse gases and solid wastes. With climate change increasingly understood as a serious problem, the need for energy-intelligent building prototypes has never been more urgent. Mass timber -- a wood-based building design and construction technology - is garnering interest due to its efficiency, speed, precision and versatility in construction for low to high-rise applications: offering environmental benefits and potential impacts on forest health and restoration. MIT Mass Timber Design has explored the design and engineering potential of these technologies and developed a mass timber-building prototype. Involving one of those part of the MIT effort, Generate LLC is structured around design of rigorously tested and cost-effective building solutions in mass timber and development of a generative design system that can generate and deploy optimal building proposals using these pre-designed building solutions.
