With facilities also in Scotland, in 2009 Gemfire became a wholly owned subsiduary of GC Holdings with its acquisition by Ignis. Ignis - and by extension Gemfire - was itself acquired by Finisair in July 2011. GC Holdings was acquired by Kaiam Corp in 2013. Gemfire specializes in applying planar processing semiconductor-type processing technology to optical platforms, creating an innovative new family of high-performance telecom components. The firm's PhtonIC optical circuit technology comprises a suite of materials, processing and packaging methods that enable the integration of mutliple optical functions in a single device. At the time of start-up, Gemfire Corporation got a jumpstart in the field by the acquisition of Deacon Research, a former SBIR-involved firm.
