Public Profile

ESS is organized around laying the groundwork for a future powered by clean and reliable energy. With a team having decades of experience in distributed power generation and energy storage technologies, ESS has developed a cost-effective energy management system combining a safe, abundant and non-toxic iron electrolyte with the firm's patented flow cell design. This combination of high performance with low cost makes ESS’s technology well suited for applications that range in size from retail energy management to utility-scale renewables integration. This matters because electricity pricing is moving from a standard flat rate tariff to a Time-of-Use (TOU) pricing structure, where rates are dependent on when electricity is consumed. With TOU pricing, the cost of electricity during peak daytime hours when most small and mid-sized businesses operate is significantly higher than the same volume of usage at night. Despite the financial incentives, consumers have had no feasible means of shifting their electricity usage profiles to take advantage of TOU pricing. The ESS energy management system automatically charges electricity when prices are low, then discharges this energy on demand when prices are high. AN added benefit is that energy stored on site allows businesses to continue operating through intermittent power outages. In addition to the advantages energy storage provides to end-users are the benefits simultaneously provided to the electrical grid. To maintain an adequate supply of power throughout the day, utilities rely on expensive fossil fuel power plants to produce energy for those peak daytime hours when electricity consumption is highest. This peak period energy costs more to produce and is more carbon intensive than baseline electricity. With distributed ESS energy management systems the balance of electricity production can be tilted away from peak periods - saving money and benefiting the environment.
