Headed up by an experienced serial entrepreneur, Eschara Medical is structured around development of a technology to treat Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The approach is effectively to leverageg what the firm's principals have observed clinically following surgical implantation of the Ethicon/ J&J (Torax Medical) LINX magnetic sphincter device. They have previously noted that the LINX device is always encapsulated in a tubular ring of collagen and (in a significant minority) the LINX device needs surgically to be removed. Clinical experience has demonstrated ongoing cessation reflux symptoms follow LINX removal. The persistent ring of collagen remaining is suggested as a possible explantation sufficient to control GERD. Eschara intends to address the creation of a collagen ring around the outside diameter of the esophagus by utilizing a bio-absorbable tubular suture matrix that will be surgically implanted in similar manner as the LINX device. In ~12 weeks the Eschara suture will be fully absorbed -- unlike the LINX device which is a permanent implant. Surgical approach would be very similar to the LINX.
