Engineered Coatings Inc (ECI) is a privately held company developing advanced coating technology that can be applied to several critical industries including transportation; metal forming; biomedical; defense/aerospace; and energy-generation. The firm was originally spun off from research and development efforts done under the Colorado School of Mines Advanced Coating and Surface Engineering Laboratory under a grant in the Entrepreneurs Technical Assistance Program to investigate a family of ceramic metal or cermet coatings that offering unique combinations high hardness, wear resistance, and toughness. ECI has investigated specially-designed coatings for: fretting and galling-wear resistance; low-friction and sliding-wear resistance; corrosion-resistance / solid-lubrication; sand-abrasion and sand-erosion-resistance; resistance to reverse engineering; and low-surface-energy, non-wetting applications. Candidate applications for these unique coatings include: contacting surfaces of oscillating/vibrating parts (e.g., bearings, gears); sliding-wear surfaces (e.g., slides) exposed to salt-fog and sand abrasion; blades operating in high-speed sand-containing environments; low-surface energy, non-wetting, and corrosion-resistant surfaces for cookware; biomedical devices; protection of electronic parts; low-profile temperature and strain sensors.
