Energetics was founded by a small group of engineers in Columbia, Maryland, who combined their consulting practices. They named the company after the term "energetics," which, according to Webster's Dictionary, means "a branch of mechanics that deals with energy and its transformations." The original owners chose this as an appropriate name because of the focus of the work they planned to do - primarily to provide consulting services to offices within the U.S. Department of Energy. In 1995, Energetics was acquired by VSE Corporation, which provided the company with a new opportunity for growth and diversification. VSE retained Energetics' management team and operates the company as a wholly owned subsidiary, with its own corporate structure and an independent President
