Anchored in biomedical and engineering work and research undertaken at UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco by one the firm's founders and principals, the effort at O.N. Diagnostics is to improve patient outcomes by developing non-invasive and clinically effective diagnostic applications that quantitatively exploit the richness of information in CT scans. With an initial focus on bone health and orthopedics, the firm's patented and FDA-cleared "virtual stress test" technology combines biomechanical engineering, computational mechanics, and advanced medical image processing to provide diagnostic measures of bone strength for a patient's hip or spine, going beyond a simple bone mineral density (BMD) test. This approach provide a comprehensive clinical assessment, comprised of BMD, bone strength, and fracture risk. Having also the capacity to analyze previously-acquired clinical CT scans as an add-on analysis, without the need for an external calibration phantom, the firm's approcah reduces inconvenience, incurred cost, and radiation exposure of a dedicated bone scan. The firm has also benefited rom collaborations many of the top research institutions in the world, all major pharmaceutical companies in the bone field, as well as medical device manufacturers in the orthopaedics field.
