Founded by the late Horace Furumonto who went on to found Cynosure after acquisition of Candela by Syneron Medical Ltd.in September 2009, Candela had been among the very earliest small firms to have been SBIR involved. Between formation and time of acquisition, the company had achieved products in over 70 countries from offices and distributors in the United States, Europe, Japan, China and other Asian locations. Candela established the aesthetic laser market, achieving an installed base of 10,000 lasers worldwide ofering nnovative clinical solutions that enable physicians, surgeons, and personal care practitioners to treat selected cosmetic and medical conditions using lasers, aesthetic laser systems, and other advanced technologies. Candela wil be remembered as a medical laser maker using laser systems for tattoo removal, treatment of dermal abnormalities (age spots, port-wine stain birthmarks), and spider veins. Products include Skinscan, for precise laser positioning, and Dynamic Cooling Device, which reduces pain by cooling upper layers of skin during treatment. Candela also made laser and cryosurgical products to treat prostate cancer, kidney stones, and liver disease. Candela sold to medical and surgical markets throughout the US and abroad. Subsidiary Candela Skin Care Centers had a skin-care center and spa in Boston.
