With headquarters in New York City, Byelocorp Scientific, Inc. (BSI) is a U.S. company set up to develop Byelorussian technology. There are two major commercial fields of endeavor: precision optical polishing based on magnetorheological fluid technology and the production of cryogenic and pressure vessels and accessories for the oil and petrochemical industry. MRF works by magnetically manipulating the viscosity of the fluid while it is in contact with a portion of the work piece surface. That creates what COM calls "a subaperture polishing lap" that conforms to the optical surface. The technology has three advantages over conventional polishing: the interferometrically characterized MRF"polishing tool" never dulls of changes; because it is a compliant fluid, the "polishing tool" adapts to complex shapes; and removal rates are very high, resulting in short processing times.
