Formerly employed by NOAA - for decades based in Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii and then in the Boulder CO lab., principal of the firm developed a simple, inexpensive technique for measuring tropospheric aerosols called Camera Lidar or CLidar. Another area of research involved a polar nephelometer design that invented and patented by Dr Barnes. A polar nephelometer is an in-situ instrument that measures the light scattering characteristics of aerosols. On retirement from NOAA, he formed a small business, BJE Environmental Optics, to commercialize the CLidar and polar nephelometer.
