With close ties to University of Texas Cockrell Engineering School's Human Centered Robotics Laboratory - and a spin out from the Human Centered Robotics Lab - Apptronik is structured around developing robots with an emphasis on their "living and working" with humans thereby to make lives safer, more productive and easier. The developed expertise of the principals of the firm come from their work in mechatronic and control software contributions for advanced legged robots including NASAs Valkyrie humanoid robot and Mekas Hume point foot biped. Human Centered Robotics includes the development of robotic devices that are designed to operate in close proximity to human beings and help to improve the human's quality of life. The firm has also explored use of some of what they have developed for use in medical applications, first responder applications and other simple human life enhancing contexts
