Delivering zero-carbon industrial heat and power, Antora Energy is structured around electrifying heavy industry with thermal energy storage for zero-carbon heat and power. The firm is tackling the critical ssue of long-term energy storage - thereby enabling full and effective use of renewable energy sources (wind and solar) - and is working on combining high-temperature thermal energy storage with novel, high-efficiency thermophotovoltaic energy conversion: low-cost thermal battery for grid-scale energy storage. The effort is tosupport the widespread integration of renewable resources on the electricity grid by combining inexpensive thermal storage media at high temperatures with high-efficiency thermophotovoltaic energy conversion, When excess electricity is available for example, at mid-day in electric power systems with high solar penetration a resistive element is used to heat an inexpensive thermal storage medium contained in a large, insulated tank. When power is needed, photovoltaic cells are exposed to the thermal radiation emanating from an emitter in contact with the hot storage medium, generating electricity. This inexpensive, long-duration energy storage technology will enable global adoption of renewable energy while also enabling the critically limportant consequeence of seriously reducing CO2 emissions.
