American Academy of Aeronautics performs applied research and education which advances the disciplines involved in vehicular flight. The Academy pursues research projects in both commercial aviation and space systems. They are working on certain small flight vehicle subsystems, including communications, sensors, and computing. The types of problems they are pursuing include: UAV "sense and avoid" (i.e., collision avoidance), autonomous search robotic platform, computer vision for UAVs and autonomous landers, and dedicated nanosatelite launch to low Earth orbit. The Academy operates its own fleet of manned aircraft, which are used for flight test engineering. It also engages in the development of small payloads for low Earth orbit and suborbital missions.
