Alba-Technic LLC develops helmets aimed at cushioning falls and preventing traumatic brain injury. The product has been tested for shock absorption and energy dissipation, and is getting ready to be commercialized. The helmet, called the Smarty, looks similar to fabric-covered headband. The helmet is as effective as the bulkier competition now on the market and due to its smaller size will be more "fashionable", de-stigmatizing the idea of wearing a helmet in public. The Smarty helmet uses a two-layer design. One layer is a flexible thermal plastic material able to absorb energy in three directions, and the other is a stiffer material that dissipates energy. After a fashionable fabric covering, available in different colors, the prototype Smarty weighs in at about 7 ounces.
