A start-up, the principals of Advanced Materials Manufacturing, LLC for overtwo decades have been working on development the Composite Metal Foam technology/ The firm's product - designated Composite metal foam (CMF) - is a new light-weight material that can be processed using either casting or powder metallurgy sintering technique. Comprised of hollow steel spheres and a solid metallic matrix that fills the outer cavities between the spheres, CMF can be made out of many different metals, alloys, and combinations, e.g., aluminum, steel, titanium, etc. Though the product can be made entirely of steel, due to its porosities, it weighs as little as aluminum. In every combination of the spheres and matrix materials by the principals, the final product weight typically is ~30-35% of the weight of the parent material with the rest being the air trapped inside its porosities.
