This SBIR project will demonstrate the feasibility of native warm season grasses as a fiber source for automotive biocomposites. The Phase I project will demonstrate the feasibility of a new protocol for the successful establishment of native warm season grasses in the Great Lakes region for use as a fiber source. This protocol will also focus on the economics of producing desired bio-fiber at the farm level. APPROACH: Emphasis will be placed on minimizing the cost of establishment while maximizing weed control and factors that will enhance stand establishment and productivity. Key research questions in Phase II will focus on converting native warm season grasses into processed fiber for automotive and other manufacturing applications at the farm level. NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: Smith, Adams & Associates LLC, is collaborating with Michigan State University (MSU) in the technology development phase of the project and has secured Overby Farms as an SBIR Third-Party, Phase III Match Funder and Commercialization Partner for the commercialization of the expected successful SBIR Phase II results. This SBIR project will demonstrate the feasibility of various methods for successful establishment of native warm season grasses in the Great Lakes region for use as a viable fiber source in automotive biocomposites. The resulting biocomposites will replace fiberglass as a raw material in the compounding process for automotive applications.
