Worldwide, the breeding, cultivation and exhibition of ornamental fish is a multi-billion dollar industry. In the U.S., the aquarium hobby is second only to photography in popularity. With a retail value approaching $1 billion annually (including dry goods) ornamental fish is a leading sector of the U.S. aquaculture industry. A fledgling Hawaiian ornamental fish industry is poised for future growth. Substantial expertise already exists in Hawaii. This, combined with excellent water quality resources, year-round subtropical climates, and a strategic location between the West Coast and Japanese markets, puts Hawaii in a favorable position for future growth. After several years of working with local producers (farmers and hobbyists), marketing fish to both the U.S. and Japan, I believe that a multi- tiered approach marrying hobbyist breeders, backyard and large-scale farmers, is the most efficient way to expand the industry. The proposed project is designed to acquire, produce and test market new species for expanded production.
Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications of Research: The development of an expanded ornamental fish industry in Hawaii will help to improve the State's sluggish economy. It will provide the State of Hawaii with a more diversified agriculture base, and comes at a time when a large void must be filled with the collapse of the sugar industry. The proposed production marketing program for ornamental fish will diversify the species cultured by breeders/farmers and expand the industry.
