To enhance U.S. Navy operations, a technology platform will be developed for fabricating environmentally robust, visible through near-infrared (NIR) band transparent, tapered resistivity films. After refining the operational requirements and updating the device design models, a design trade study will be performed using the measured electrical (i.e., conductivity) and optical (i.e., spectral transmission and index of refraction) properties of selected nanocomposite materials. After design optimization, uniform and gradient resistivity transparent films will be printed on window substrates and, after characterization, optical (transmission, index of refraction), electrical (impedance, capacitance), and freespace testing will be performed over the “S” and “X” radar bands. The measured performance will be compared to simulated results, and the design parameters will be updated, as necessary. The films will be optimized to be long lived in the harsh maritime environment. To demonstrate reliable use in combatant crafts, the R-card coatings will be tested against solar/UV exposure, heavy rain, sea spray, temperature, etc. They will also be shown to be rugged and capable of withstanding operational vibration and mechanical shock profiles. Scaled cost models will also be developed.
