In today's tactical areas of operation, signal threat detection is one of the integral aspects of the SOF mission. In nearly all regions where SOF operations take place, there is a need for the ability to detect enemy communications (known and unknown) and DF on their locations. Additionally, SOF units have a critical need for short range tactical communications to stay in contact with other units in the field. Presently, SOF has the equipment to perform these various functions but they are in separate physical packages. What is needed is a merging of communications transceiver and threat warning capabilities into one single lightweight package. This state-of-the-art solution will be a small, rugged, VHF/UHF tactical threat warning radio. In addition, this Radio will be augmented with enhanced features, such as networking and DF capability. The Radio must support secure voice and data, but at the same time continue to provide fast wideband signal detection. Such an advanced radio technology will allow the SOF team members to be network-centric warriors in the field for increased situational awareness and combat effectiveness. When completed the Radio will be a vital addition to SOF's tactical assets and provide superior mission capability for 21st century engagements.
